Kingswood FC Silent Sidelines Policy

In accordance with the FAI Child Welfare & Safeguarding Policy

1. Purpose

The Silent Sidelines Policy aims to create a positive, supportive, and pressure-free environment for young players.
By reducing shouting and sideline interference, KFC helps players make their own decisions, develop confidence, and enjoy football in a safe and respectful setting.

2. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • All club matches, festivals, and training sessions involving children under 18
  • All coaches, parents/guardians, club officials, and spectators
  • All venues used by Kingswood FC, home or away

3. Policy Statement

Kingswood FC fully supports and implements the FAI Silent Sidelines initiative.
We believe that:

  • Children learn best when they are allowed to think, play, and make decisions for themselves.
  • Positive encouragement—not instruction—from the sidelines supports enjoyment and learning.
  • Respect for referees, players, and opponents must be shown at all times.

4. Guidelines for Silent Sidelines

A. Coaches

  • Give clear guidance before the match or training session.
  • Provide encouragement only at breaks or after the game.
  • Do not shout instructions during play—allow players to make decisions.
  • Praise effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

B. Parents & Spectators

  • Remain silent during play – no shouting instructions, coaching, or criticism.
  • Applaud good play from both teams.
  • Use only positive encouragement such as clapping or "well done".
  • Do not question referees or linespeople.
  • Respect the referee, opposition, and all participants.

C. Players

  • Play fairly and respect teammates, referees, and opponents.
  • Make their own decisions on the pitch.
  • Feel supported, not pressured.

D. Referees & Officials

  • Supported by the club in enforcing Silent Sidelines.
  • Can remind spectators/coaches of the policy when needed.

5. Implementation Procedures

  1. Before Each Game
    • The coach or team official reminds everyone that Silent Sidelines are in effect.
    • A brief message is given to parents/spectators outlining expected behaviour.
  2. During the Game
    • Only coaches (maximum two per team) may speak briefly to players for encouragement, if necessary.
    • Parents/spectators remain silent except for applause.
  3. If the Policy Is Breached
    • The coach or Child Welfare Officer may issue a polite reminder.
    • Persistent breaches may result in the spectator being asked to leave the sideline.
    • Serious or repeated incidents will be reported to the Club Committee and may lead to disciplinary action under the FAI Code of Conduct.

6. Responsibilities

  • Club Committee: Ensure the policy is communicated and enforced.
  • Coaches & Team Officials: Lead by example and brief parents regularly.
  • Parents/Guardians: Support the club ethos by following the policy.
  • Child Welfare Officer: Address concerns or complaints relating to sideline behaviour.

7. Review

This policy will be reviewed every two years or sooner if required by changes in FAI policy or club structure.
